We were full of expectations as we had all read about the town but nobody had ever visited it. We stopped en route for a welcome coffee or beer at Viva Espana at Oliva when Carol distributed albaricoques that David had collected from the groves the day before. We arrived at Xativa which took us all by surprise as it was a very elegant town with tree lined roads and lots of cafes with people bustling all around. The market was in full swing so that was the first stopping place for most of us and certainly there were many purchases made. Several members jumped on the tram/bus which took them halfway up to the castle which was perched on the top of one of the surrounding mountains. They enjoyed a Menu Del Dia and then returned by taxi as the tram was not operating again until 5.30 pm that day. Others members enjoyed the wonderful architecture and visited the beautiful church and old hospital which was within walking distance of the main street and also used the local tapas bars for a bite to eat. All in all we had a memorable day and it wasn’t until we got on the coach again that Manolo, our driver, told us that Xativa was the hottest town in the Valenciana region due to it being surrounded by mountains – in fact the digital clock where we picked up the coach was showing 46 degrees!
